“I love problem-solving!  I knew if I pursued a degree in a field I loved, obtaining the degree would be that much easier.”  The 32-year-old of Palmdale, CA, is currently enrolled in the Distance Learning program at Mayville State University!  Jana Perea is pursuing a degree in Mathematics and will graduate in 2019.

As her family continued to grow, Jana knew traditional classroom setting wasn’t the best fit with her busy lifestyle.  “For years I considered going back to finish my bachelor’s degree, and it never felt like the right time," said Perea.  "I have five children (ages 2-11!), and I needed something that enabled me to learn content and complete assignments around our busy schedule.”  She added, “because I am learning online, I am able to access my courses wherever I go, and whenever is most convenient.”

The secret to being a successful online student is about being consistent.  “I log in to my courses and check my email regularly, and make it a point to write down due dates!  From there I try to do a little each day.  I also have found success by communicating with my professors – whether I am asking for clarification on an assignment, or having trouble accessing content.”

“Now that I am finishing up my last year, I do not know what took me so long!  Obtaining a degree online really is doable and so very rewarding.”

Jana feels fortunate to be a Distance Learning student at MSU!  “The professors at Mayville are incredibly supportive," she said.  "I always have sensed that they want me to succeed, and will do what they can to support my growth as a student.

After graduation, Jana plans to continue her education.  “I am considering a master’s degree or a teaching credential.  I am using this last year at Mayville to explore my options, and figure out which will be the best fit for my career goals in the long run.”
