Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing was established in 1922 by six nurses at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now the Indiana University School of Nursing, in Indianapolis. The founders chose the name from the Greek words “storge, tharsos, and time,” meaning “love, courage, and honor.” STTI became incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1985 as Sigma Theta Tau International, Inc. STTI was rebranded to SIGMA in 2019.

The vision of SIGMA is to have “connected, empowered nurse leaders transforming global healthcare.” Their mission is to “develop nurse leaders anywhere to improve healthcare everywhere.” Individuals who meet eligibility criteria are invited to join Sigma. They must be baccalaureate or graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship. Nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievement in nursing are also eligible. Sigma has more than 135,000 active members in 500 chapters and residing in more than 85 countries.
