Dr. John Lyng, a 2001 Mayville State graduate, has been selected to deliver the 71st Louis H. Bauer Lecture at the Aerospace Medical Association (ASMA) and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) Annual Scientific Meeting in Denver on May 18, 2026. The Bauer Lecture is one of the conference’s most prestigious honors, recognizing leadership and contributions in aerospace and operational medicine.
Dr. Lyng’s presentation, titled “Redefining Readiness in the Sky: Development of Evidence-Based Recommendations to update On-Board Medical Kits in the United States,” will highlight efforts to improve emergency medical preparedness during in-flight incidents. His work brings together medical and aviation experts to develop data-driven recommendations aimed at strengthening onboard medical kits and enhancing the capabilities of volunteer responders on commercial aircraft.
An emergency and EMS physician, Lyng earned an M.D. from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 2005. Dr. Lyng is widely recognized for his advocacy in improving patient care outside traditional clinical settings. His contributions continue to shape conversations around emergency preparedness, both on the ground and in the air, as global leaders gather in Denver to explore advancements in aerospace medicine and human performance. Lyng will follow in notable footsteps, speaking at the same conference where the commander of Apollo 13 appeared in 1979.
