Mayville State University Head Baseball Coach Scott Berry has announced that he plans to retire at the end of the 2022-23 season. Berry has been an integral part of Comets Baseball since he played for the Comets in the late 1970s. After graduating from Mayville State, Berry coached baseball teams in Ellendale, Binford, Rolla, and Casselton, N.D., then he returned to his alma mater as an assistant baseball coach for Al Meyer in 1981. He became the head coach during the 1982 season.

One of the foremost and highly respected baseball coaches in America, Scott Berry runs one of the most outstanding college baseball programs in the nation. A member of seven halls of fame and an active participant in local, regional, and national baseball organizations, Berry has kept Mayville State on the collegiate baseball map for more than four decades. In 2010, the baseball field at Mayville State University was named in his honor.

“I am extremely grateful to Coach Berry for all he has done for Comets Baseball and for Mayville State University as a whole,” said Mayville State University President Dr. Brian Van Horn. “Not only is he an excellent coach who has had a profound impact on our baseball program and the individuals he has coached, his loyalty and dedication to the university have helped to make it a better place. Scott has no doubt made his mark at Mayville State and across the country. We are blessed to have him as a member of the Mayville State Family, and I wish him all the best as he embarks on a new chapter in his life.”

“Mayville State University has had just two head baseball coaches in the last 75 years, Scott Berry and Al Meyer. The longevity and prowess of these legendary coaches is amazing,” said Mayville State University Athletic Director Jay DeCann. “I thank Coach Berry for his contributions and wish him all the best. I hope his retirement is everything he hopes for and more.”
