Grateful for community support and opportunities to gather

We’re already well into September and have had many opportunities for campus and community fun with great festivities. The Sportsmen’s Raffle event was held Sept. 10 and the Farmers Bowl festivities are right behind on Sept. 17. I am among the many Mayville State alumni and friends who look forward to these events that provide time for socialization while supporting Mayville State.

Saturday, Sept. 10 was a big day for Mayville State! The Comets won an exciting football game against Nebraska Wesleyan in overtime. I could not have been prouder of our coaches and team. As icing on the cake, Mayville State quarterback Tim Salmon was named the NAIA and NSAA Offensive Player of the Week this week! That’s a big deal, and we celebrate this recognition with Tim and his teammates. His offensive line and receivers deserve a lot of credit for his receiving of the award.

The annual Comet Athletic Club Sportsmen’s Raffle event followed at the Mayville Armory. The group had sold 500 tickets for the opportunity to win one of 50 guns. Many gathered at the Armory to learn who the lucky winners would be. Those in attendance enjoyed a nice meal provided by MSU Dining Services.

I could never say enough good things about the Comet Athletic Club board and the work they do. They are volunteers extraordinaire. Whether they are working at the weekly Bingo events at the Top Hat, organizing and serving a meal to welcome our student athletes, or soliciting memberships to the Comet Athletic Club, they are always busy. These individuals are super-generous with their time and talents. Mayville State is truly blessed by their efforts which result in scholarships for student athletes.

Saturday, Sept. 17 will be filled with more fun things to do. It’s a time to let your Comet Pride show, and I hope to see a great number of people out and about for Farmers Bowl 2022.

Led by the local color guard, the Farmers Bowl Parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lineup for the parade will begin at 10 a.m. north of the Goose River Bank in downtown Mayville. The parade will make its way east down Main Street, turn north on 5th Avenue, and end at Mayville State’s Jerome Berg Field.

Immediately following the parade, our athletic teams will be ready to serve corn on the cob and hot dogs for all. During this time, there will be live music by Kenny and the Classics, as well as face painting and inflatable games for the kids. All are invited to participate. There is no charge for the meal, but freewill donations will be accepted to help defray the costs.

The Comets will be sporting their Farmers Bowl helmets that feature the wheat motif to honor our farmers when they host Presentation College in the Farmers Bowl football game. Game time is 2 p.m. at Jerome Berg Field.

The MSU Foundation is bringing back the much-anticipated Farmers Bowl Auction this year! After a taking a break for a few years, the auction will be back with both live and silent auction events. Socializing and bidding on the silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. Serving of the buffet-style meal will begin at 5:30 p.m. and run until 7:30 p.m.

The excitement of the live auction will be unleashed at 7:30 p.m. with auctioneer Dennis Biliske at the podium. Mayville State alumni and friends have donated a great assortment of auction items of all shapes, sizes, and varieties. We look forward to hosting a large crowd of supporters who we hope will bid high and bid often. Proceeds of the auction benefit the students of Mayville State through the work of the MSU Foundation. The auction will be held in the MSU Campus Center Luckasen Room. Admission tickets are $35 and may be purchased online at www.mayvillestate.edu/farmersbowl or at May-Port Hardware Hank, the MSU Bookstore, or the offices of the MSU Foundation.

Farmers Bowl was established years ago as a celebration and recognition of the agricultural way of life in our area, all centered around a Mayville State football game. We have much to celebrate in our special little corner of the world. Don’t miss this opportunity to commemorate the gifts that are ours. Let’s cheer for our teams and take great pride in our next generation of leaders who include future farmers. See the full Farmers Bowl schedule and all the details, including a list of the auction items, at www.mayvillestate.edu/farmersbowl.
