The fall semester is upon us

We eagerly await the fall semester and the return of a campus filled with students, faculty, and staff. It will be wonderful to see those who have been away for the summer as well as to meet and get to know the newest members of the Mayville State family.

Staff and faculty are very busy preparing for the fall semester. We are blessed to have exceptional employees who are both hard-working and dedicated to the mission of making lives better for students in pursuit of their goals and dreams.

Comets head football coach Rocky Larson says they had 103 report for camp on Aug. 1. Football players have moved into the residence halls. Coach Larson and his staff have worked extremely diligently in recruiting and building their team. We look forward to seeing how their plans come together and to cheering them on as they work to represent Mayville State University well on and off the field.

Head volleyball coach Lindsey Johnson’s team of 26 reported for pre-season camp on Aug. 6. The varsity team’s first games of the season are August 18-19 in Florida. The junior varsity will play in Bismarck August 19-20. We are Comet Proud of the coaches and players and we look forward to seeing great things happen for them this season.

Upperclassmen who play baseball will report on Aug. 18, while the freshmen will check in on Aug. 20 to begin preparations for their fall season. Softball players will report on Aug. 22. Men’s basketball players and coaches will begin their pre-season work on Aug. 18, and the women’s basketball team will begin workouts on Aug. 20. I commend all the teams and their coaches for their work as Comets. We look forward to seeing all the athletic teams in action this year.

Plans are being made for pre-service activities for faculty and staff Aug. 17, 18, and 19. During these three days, lots of information will be shared. There will be time for training, catching up, and learning. This is also when I will give the annual state of the university address, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 10:30 a.m. in the Old Main Theatre. I invite all alumni, friends, and community members to join the faculty and staff for my address, as well as for a lunch that will follow in the Campus Center dining hall.

The first classes of the fall semester are scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22. The first full day of classes is Tuesday, Aug. 23.

Students may begin moving into residence halls on Aug. 20. Our Student Life staff members have lots of activities planned for new and returning students. The bookstore and dining center will be open for business. Students will be able to get their campus mailboxes and have their ID photos taken. On that day, there will be a backyard bash and bonfire on the grounds outside Agassiz Hall.

Students may continue to move into the residence halls on Aug. 21. A number of “Week of Welcome” (WOW) activities, including trivia, a Neon Night outdoor pool party at the Mayville water park, open mic night, stargazing, stargazing, and more, are planned throughout the week. Cru will sponsor a Fun Field Day outside the Wellness Center on Aug. 25.

I will have the great pleasure of officially welcoming students to campus at an assembly planned for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22. This is an activity I look forward to each fall as we kick off a new academic year. It is my honor and privilege to work together with and get to know our wonderful students and this assembly gives me the opportunity to begin to build important relationships with our newest students.
