Championship rings were awarded to the players and coaches of the 2022-23 Mayville State men's basketball team at a gathering held Friday evening, Aug. 25. All members of the 2023-24 team also participated in the celebration that included pizza, photos, and a time for team bonding.
The 2022-23 Comets were the North Star Athletic Association regular season champions. They defeated Dickinson State to win the NSAA conference tournament last February. Thomas Gieske was named NSAA Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference. Trent Blackshire was named NSAA Second Team All-Conference and Brandon McGruder was named NSAA Coach of the Year.
With a 25-5 win-loss record, the Comets advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in March.
Thomas Gieske was named NAIA All-American Third Team.
The North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association named Brandon McGruder their Male Coach of the Year. The Comets were a finalist for College Male Team. Mayville State workhorse Thomas Gieske was nominated for College Male Athlete.
