Biography
Education
Dr. Hossain received a B. S in Agricultural Sciences Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University and M. S in Genetics and Plant Breeding from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Bangladesh. He completed his Ph. D in Molecular Genetics from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, U. K with a Commonwealth Scholarship. He received a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowship and was a postdoctoral scientist at Faculty of Horticulture, Chiba University, Matsudo, Japan. Before starting his position at Mayville State University in 2005, he was a postdoctoral scientist and a senior research scientist at Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University (NDSU), Fargo, ND.
Courses Offered
- Biology 150 and 151- General Biology I and II
- Biology 315- Genetics
- Biology 341- Cell & Molecular Biology
- Biology 302- Survey of Microbiology
- AGEC 310- Principle of Crop Production
Research Interests
Dr. Hossain is a molecular geneticist, and his research focus is on the utilization of Crop Products for Human Health and Climate Management. Wheat bran, a byproduct after milling, contains valuable polymers and phenolic compounds. Dr. Hossain introduced treated wheat bran into thermoplastic composite which showed the potentiality of reducing 30% Carbon emission from Thermoplastic industries. He extracted arabinoxylan from wheat bran and functionalized it as nanoparticles which could be used for nucleic acid or drug delivery. He has been working on preparing mesh like polymeric scaffold that mimics the extracellular matrix of the human body and supports growth and development of cancer cells.
Dr. Hossain is also interested in plants bioactive compounds and working on compounds isolated from quinoa and cattail using GC-MS. His plan is to identify compounds with anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancerous properties and analyze their effect on the growth and development of fungus, bacteria, and cancer cells.
