There’s no place like ‘home’

Thoughts of Homecoming conjure up sentiments about “home.” Everyone has their own thoughts about what “home” means to them, but I can’t help but think about how the community becomes “home” to our students and alumni. The Mayville-Portland and Traill County communities are truly special. People are kind beyond words, and their actions, big and small, evoke feelings of “home” for all with whom they interact.

Shaye Kemball, Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Donnie Dulski, Glyndon, N.D., were named queen and king of Mayville State University’s homecoming festivities held the week of Oct. 7-13. Other members of the royal court were Jaden Christianson, Fertile, Minn.; Alissa Foster, Salinas, Calif.; Jayden Warner, Clifford, N.D.; Kaitlin Leier, Mandan, N.D.; Creighton Pfau, West Fargo, N.D.; Darrel Wilson, Douglasville, Ga.; Trent Carlson, Park River, N.D.; and Daniel Simpson, Chesapeake, Va.

Women’s basketball team ‘Service Day’ planned

The Mayville State University women’s basketball team will be taking an opportunity to give back to the Mayville State and Mayville-Portland communities that support them throughout their athletic seasons and careers. They will hold their “Service Day” Sunday, Oct. 20. The women will be in the community helping their neighbors inside and outside of their houses from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Outstanding character makes us Comet Proud!

During the past several days, a couple of people who are near and dear to my heart have faced adversity and handled it in ways that have elevated the level of respect I have for each of them. Ricky Flowers, from Oakland, Calif., is a senior linebacker on the Mayville State football team. Gunnar Petersen is a senior on the football team at May-Port CG High School.

After Hours social planned for October 15

An After Hours social for women is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the home of Heidi Krivarchka, 40 Westwood Drive, Mayville, N.D. The event will be hosted by Linda Baier, Debbie Hagen, Connie Kaldor, Pam Soholt, and Heidi Krivarchka. All women are invited to attend.

Mayville State’s Master of Arts in Teaching program recognized

Mayville State University’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program has been recognized as a top pick in Teacher.Org’s 2019-2020 Best Value Teacher Prep Master’s Programs list. The organization combed through hundreds of schools around the nation and hand-picked master’s degree programs to be included on the list.
