Building a Thriving STEM Ecosystem in North Dakota

Welcome to the Sustainable Programs Advancing Research and Knowledge across North Dakota (SPARK-ND) initiative at Mayville State University.

Funded by a major National Science Foundation (NSF) E-CORE award, this collaborative project aims to build a sustainable science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research and education ecosystem throughout the state.

Mayville State University is a key partner, leading the STEM Pathways Core to increase research literacy and opportunities for rural students.


Our Programs

Mayville State University's STEM Pathways Core offers four distinct programs designed to inspire and educate students at various stages of their academic careers. Click on each program to learn more about how to get involved and the specific opportunities available.

  • Scientist in the Classroom: This program brings Mayville State STEM faculty directly into middle and high school classrooms. Students will engage in interactive projects and demonstrations that highlight the importance of STEM and its relevance to their communities.

  • Research Shadow or Ride-along: Middle and high school students will get a unique, firsthand look at authentic scientific research. By observing research in action at Mayville State laboratory facilities or various field sites, students can be inspired to pursue future careers in STEM.

  • Research Experiences for High School Students: High school students will have the chance to engage in genuine research alongside Mayville State faculty. They will develop critical research skills and be paid for their participation, fostering a strong interest in STEM.

  • Academic Year Research Experiences: This program expands undergraduate research opportunities at Mayville State. Students will collaborate with STEM faculty on year-long research projects, gaining invaluable hands-on experience and preparing them for future academic or professional pursuits.
