I've Completed my Application. Now what?
Students will complete their housing applications between December and August for the next school year - their interest and their schedule and their plans make this a process that the student usually decides for themselves. For those students that apply prior to April 1 or so, here's what's happening.
Mayville State students - think next year's Juniors and Sophomores - have some time to select the rooms and the roommates they want for the next year, and we work during the month of March to get them settled into (on paper) their next-year room. Until that process ends, we don't know the available space for new freshmen.
Once the upperclassmen are set, we work on the freshmen class. Our goal is to have your assignment - if you've applied by April 1 or so - ready to announce to you around April 20. Changes certainly can and will occur after April 20, but we will work to let you know what we're up to and what your preference are if a change is being made.
Most of the time changes occur because someone has met a new friend who'll be attending Mayville State and now! I want that person as my roommate. And we'll try. Just be sure to ask and tell us your needs.
If you have applied, in part please have some patience and in part plan to see the initial room assignments, shortly after Easter weekend.
Move In Date
- Most students will move in Saturday, August 19, 2023 for the fall semester.
- Some students will move in after Saturday. Fewer crowds, easier to navigate the elevator or stairs, but you are missing out on the welcome weekend activities.
- Some students will arrive earlier than Saturday, most often because they participate with a fall sports team. If that is the case, your coach will present you with arrival dates and time.
Residence Hall Furnishings
- bed - a twin bed XL length (you'll find this in the college section of most department stores).
note: (the bed frames can be set "high" or "low" or somewhere in between. Tubs can be stored under the beds. If you think you might want your bed to be about shoulder height (this provides the most floor space and the bed is designed for this) find a short ladder to bring.
- desk and desk chair
- closet space (we don't have doors on the closets, so a tension rod and drape or shower curtain is an option, but really it's not the norm.)
- dresser unit
- lock for your bedroom door and, if applicable, for the suite door to your unit
Appliances:
- you can bring a TV
- if you bring a TV, bring a TV stand. This is probably the only furniture you will need to carry in.
- a gaming cube is okay. You will need to work with IT - we prefer your x-box, etc., run off the wired internet.
- cooking dishes (stove top or microwave dishes)
- there is a microwave and a range in each kitchenette, located on nearly every wing in all three buildings. You don't need to bring a microwave and you have access to cook on our appliances.
- small refrigerator (if you buy it at Walmart, Target, etc., then it's fine). Coordinate with your roommate, because one is usually enough.
- a desk lamp can be helpful.
Also bring:
- academic supplies (duh)
- small trashcan
- computer (printers are available in the library, campus center, and residence halls)
- laundry basket, soap, and dryer sheets - there is a laundry located in each residence hall, and in some cases on the floor where you live. You will not need quarters.
- a iron for your clothes (pause for laughter)
- a lockable storage container (parents: I bought this one for my first two college kids. Use your best judgment/jp)
- a lot of students have a plastic set of drawers/closet organizer. It's not required and YMMV, but think about it.
- personal care items
- a container for carrying your shampoo/soap/shower supplies (even in Agassiz -- you're meant to empty your shower each week on cleaning day).
Miscellaneous:
- basic first aid kit
- fan for your room (esp. if you are in Berg or Birkelo)
- surge protector (1 power strip) (splurge and get a good one with additional plugs and a longer cord. Avoid the $8 and look at the $20 model. It's better all around.) Extension cords without the surge protector can cause fire and should not be brought.
Linens:
Linen service and linens are not provided by the University.
Clothing:
Two messages here. If you're from North Dakota, Winnipeg, or Minnesota, it's always fun to tease people from away about how cold it gets. On the other hand, if you're not from here, you might be intimidated about how cold it gets. This is a pretty factually accurate site about the weather.
This is a good page about clothing. Advice: invest in a really good coat, and make sure you have hats and gloves. We do a decent job of moving snow off of sidewalks, so have good shoes but don't focus on industrial strength boots. Once the weather turns, you'll spend more time indoors than out, so don't focus on new sweaters or wool-lined pants. Dress comfortably, anticipate layers of clothing, and you'll be fine.
Cars and Public Transportation
There is no bus or train service directly to Mayville or to campus. Our town has a discount store, a grocery store, convenience stores, and other businesses. For most, it's very comfortable but those students expecting public transportation will not find it.
If your car has a block heater, please note we do not have outlets for car. Make sure you have a good battery, and bring a portable, chargeable "jumper" if you might need it.
Accommodations
Some students need to seek modifications in policy or living situations to enable them to succeed in college. We want to help.

Physical Disabilities: Mayville State is committed to working with students to provide safe housing and to identify modifications to assignments or our facilities to address individualized needs. Housing Staff, Counseling, Student Success Programs, and Student Affairs staff will identify the best person to contact you about your needs and our capacity to address those.
Emotional Support or Therapy Animals: Mayville State will work with residents who have received a diagnosis and care plan that including an emotional support animal. Not all facilities are amenable to animals, but University Housing is committed to meeting reasonable accommodation requests.
Mail and Phone Questions
Phone info: Verizon/Tracfone/StraightTalk have the strongest service for students on campus; AT&T also has service that is usable in the local area. Students sometimes struggle with phone service from T-Mobile or Sprint or those companies that use their mainframe, although the wifi components of your phone will work on the campus wifi.
