Several Mayville State University alumni and friends will be honored during Mayville State University’s 2017 homecoming weekend festivities scheduled for Oct. 6 through 8 in Mayville, N.D.

Melissa Charboneau-Folch, Otsego, Minn., Stu Gilman, Calgary, Alberta, Neil Steffes, Fertile, Minn., Lonnie Thomas, Rockville, Md., and the 1988 baseball team will be inducted into the Mayville State University Athletic Hall of Fame. Nick Storhaug, Lisbon, N.D., will be inducted into Mayville State Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame. Gwen Shaffer, Mayville, N.D., will receive the Distinguished Service Award. These folks will all be honored during a banquet scheduled for Friday, Oct. 6, beginning at 6 p.m. in the MSU Campus Center Luckasen Room. A pre-dinner social will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the MSU Larson Alumni and Leadership Center.

Mayville State established the Performing Arts Hall of Fame in 2013. The tradition continues during the MSU Music Department homecoming concert Sunday, Oct. 8, beginning at 2 p.m. in the MSU Classroom Building Auditorium. The recognition of this year’s inductees will take place between the performances of the concert choir and the concert band. Inductees are Caroline (Knudson) Brown, Rapid City, S.D., Robert Gust, Fargo, N.D.; Dr. Joseph Hegstad, now deceased, but formerly of Minot, N.D. and Scottsdale, Ariz., and David “White Thunder” Trottier, Rugby, N.D. The Alumni Association board will host a social to honor the Performing Arts Hall of Fame inductees in the MSU Campus Center Luckasen Room immediately following the concert. The public is invited to join in celebrating with the inductees and their families and friends.

The Mayville State University Alumni Association is sponsoring a number of additional events in celebration of Homecoming 2017. A special invitation is extended to all Mayville State alumni and friends.

Homecoming day, Saturday, Oct. 7, will begin with an alumni meet and greet at the Edson and Margaret Larson Alumni and Leadership Center, located at the corner of Third Avenue and Stan Dakken Drive. Alumni and friends are invited to stop by for socializing and refreshments from 9 to 11 a.m.

Former Mayville State men’s basketball players are invited to a gathering and tailgating beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 7. Homecoming weekend will also include a couple of home volleyball games. The Comets will play against University of Jamestown on Friday, Oct. 6, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. They’ll face Dickinson State at noon on Oct. 7.

The traditional homecoming parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7. It will start near the Campus Center on Mayville State’s campus, head west on Stan Dakken Drive, then south on Third Avenue. The procession will then move east along Main Street, ending at Island Park. Individuals honored by their loved ones in the Military Honor Garden, located on the grounds at MSU’s Edson and Margaret Larson Alumni and Leadership Center, will be recognized in a ceremony of remembrance scheduled for 12 noon Saturday, Oct. 7. The program will include music and the reading of the names of the honorees. The Mayville State Alumni Association board will serve chili immediately following the program. All are welcome. Freewill donations to help defray meal expenses will be accepted.

The Comets football team will face the Presentation College in the homecoming game which begins at 2 p.m. at Jerome Berg Field. All homecoming honorees will be recognized at half time of the game.

An all-alumni homecoming reunion will begin at 4 p.m. at the Mayville Golf Course. A picnic-style supper will be served from 4 to 7 p.m., or until the food is gone. Socializing will continue until 9 p.m. The public is invited to attend the reunion and visit with the 2017 homecoming honorees and all Mayville State alumni and friends. There is no charge for the supper, but freewill donations will be accepted to help defray costs.

Homecoming 2017 will wrap up with the MSU Music Department Homecoming Concert. MSU Music Director Dr. Cody Hunter is inviting Mayville State alumni to join the concert choir for a couple of numbers.
