Several Mayville State University alumni and friends will be honored during Mayville State University’s 2013 homecoming festivities scheduled for Oct. 11 through Oct. 13 in Mayville, N.D.

Allan Larson, Crookston, Minn.; Rodney Anderson, Lisbon, N.D.; Ron Ness, Moorhead, Minn.; and Cedric Weatherspoon, Minneapolis, Minn.; will be inducted into the Mayville State University Athletic Hall of Fame at the annual Hall of Fame Awards Dinner. Michael Sly is being honored posthumously. The MSU Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes people who excelled as athletes or coaches at Mayville State or who have gone above and beyond in support of Mayville State athletics. The recognition of these individuals will begin with a social in the MSU Campus Center Luckasen Room at 5:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11. Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. 

Jim Bisenius, Roseville, Calif.; Dan Carr, Linton, N.D.; John Hutchison, Northwood, N.D.; David Hanson, St. Thomas, N.D.; and Bob Zimney, Grand Forks, N.D.; will each be inducted into Mayville State Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame. The purpose of this division of Mayville State’s Hall of Fame is to recognize Mayville State alumni who have excelled in their careers as coaches. The Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame awards will be presented at a luncheon scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in the MSU Campus Center Luckasen Room.

Mayville State will start a new tradition with the induction of the first-ever Performing Arts Hall of Fame inductees during the homecoming concert Sunday, Oct. 13. The recognition of the inductees will take place between the performances of the Mayville State concert choir and the concert band. Inductees are Merwyn Green (posthumously); Francis Colby, Fargo, N.D.; Christopher Jones, Pinson, Ala.; the Clark and Joann Ewen family, Mayville, N.D.; Dennis Connelly, Bismarck, N.D.; Vernon Gerig, Jr. (posthumously), Eugene Gaffney, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; and Olaf Ringerud, Carrington, N.D.

Immediately following the concert, the Alumni Association board will host a social to honor the Performing Arts Hall of Fame inductees in the MSU Campus Center Luckasen Room. The public is invited to join in celebrating with the inductees and their families and friends.

The Mayville State University Alumni Association is sponsoring a number of events in celebration of Homecoming 2013, October 11-13.

Festivities will kick off with an open house at the Northern Lights Art Gallery, located in the upper level of the MSU Campus Center, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11. View the show “Sundogs and Sunflowers: Folklore and Folk Art of the Northern Great Plains” and enjoy refreshments. There is no admission charge. The gallery will also be open for viewing Saturday, Oct. 12 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

In addition to the Hall of Fame Awards Dinner, Friday’s activities will include a social for alumni and friends at the Top Hat in downtown Mayville, from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m.

The traditional homecoming parade will start at the MSU campus and make its way through town beginning at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12. Those interested in entering a unit in the parade should contact Kelsey Henning at 701-788-4822 or kelsey.henning@mayvillestate.edu.

There will be “Sneak Peek” previews at Mayville State’s future alumni center, the Edson and Margaret Larson Alumni and Leadership Center, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited to stop by and see the progress that’s been made in the renovation of Mayville State’s historic Northwest Hall.

The public is invited to join in the festivities at the Mayville State Alumni Association Homecoming Meet & Greet planned for Saturday, Oct. 12. A tent where alumni and friends can gather and enjoy snacks and games will be set up outside of MSU’s Jerome Berg Field. There will be inflatable games for kids young and old, as well as bean bag toss and other yard games. The first 100 alumni to stop by will be given an insulated tumbler commemorating Mayville State’s 125th anniversary. The concessions area at Jerome Berg Field will be open for those who wish to get a bite to eat. The Meet & Greet activities are scheduled to take place from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. All are welcome!

The Mayville State Comets will face Valley City State University in the homecoming football game, which begins at 2:00 p.m. at Jerome Berg Field. All homecoming honorees will be recognized at half time of the game.

The day will culminate with the all-alumni homecoming reunion for alumni and friends. A picnic-style supper will be served from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Mayville Golf Club. There is no charge for the supper, but freewill donations will be accepted. Socializing will continue until 10:00 p.m. The public is invited to join in visiting with the homecoming honorees and others.
