Fourth annual Around the Horn Golf Classic is August 1

For the fourth year, alumni and friends will be supporting Mayville State’s legendary baseball program through the annual Around the Horn Golf Classic. The tourney will be held on Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Mayville Golf Course. Shotgun start is at 11:00 a.m. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. This is a best ball scramble. In case of inclement weather, the tournament will be held on Friday, August 8.

The registration fee for the Around the Horn Golf Classic is $75 per golfer. The fee covers 18 holes of golf, cart, beverages and brats on the course, door prizes and awards, a Comets gift package, and a ball park dinner with all the fixings after the tournament. The event is limited to the first 180 golfers, so if you’re interested, you should get signed up as soon as possible. Registration is available at www.mayvillestate.edu/AroundtheHornGolfClassic. Comets fans and supporters who are not golfing are invited to join the group for dinner at 5:30 p.m. Cost for dinner only is $15.00.

Businesses have an opportunity to sponsor holes in the Around the Horn Golf Classic. If you wish to participate in hole sponsorship at $100 per hole, please make your wishes known as soon as possible. Send donation to Mayville State University; ATTN: Pete Pratt; Around the Horn Golf Hole Sponsorships; 330 Third Street NE; Mayville, ND  58257. Please include company name, logo, and any motto you'd like included on the sponsorship sign.

The Around the Horn Golf Classic is the first of many great events that will be held during the next few months. Summer seems to fly by, and before we know it, we will have our student athletes back on campus for fall camps. The volleyball team plays in Sioux City, Iowa August 22, and the first football game of the season is a home game on August 23, which is also move-in day for new students.

I’m happy to report that our first-ever Mayville State University Minnesota Twins outing, sponsored by the Alumni Association, is sold out! Fifty-three Comets alumni and friends will be watching the Twins as they take on the Kansas City Royals at Target Field on August 16. We’re looking forward to a great evening of baseball and socializing.

The eighth annual Comet Athletic Club Sportsmen’s Raffle will be held at the Mayville Armory on Saturday, September 6. Tickets for a one in ten chance to win a gun are on sale now! Sixty guns will be raffled, and no more than 600 tickets will be sold. You may also purchase a chance to win a 2014 Polaris Ranger in a raffle being sponsored by Finley Motorsports. In addition, a number of great prizes, including a John Deere gun safe donated by Valley Plains Equipment and a Case IH grill donated by Titan Machinery, will be given away in side raffles at the event. We’re grateful to Chad’s Excavating, our event sponsor, and to HB Sound & Light for providing great sound, lighting, and graphics for the event. Purchase your tickets and see the details at www.mayvillestate.edu/sportsmensraffle.

Homecoming festivities for alumni and friends are planned for October 3 through 5. We’ll recognize this year’s Athletic Hall of Fame and Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame inductees at a banquet planned for Friday evening, October 3. Family-friendly activities are being planned after the parade and before the football game on October 4, and the Downtown Horns will be playing for a special 125th anniversary ball that will be held on the evening of October 4. It will be a pleasure to induct a new class of members to Mayville State’s Performing Arts Hall of Fame during the music department concert on October 5. Have you heard about the 125-voice reunion choir that’s being formed? They’ll perform a couple of numbers during the concert. Sign up at www.mayvillestate.edu/125voices. There will be much more information about homecoming available soon. See the details at www.mayvillestate.edu/homecoming2014.

Farmers Bowl is a little later than usual this year, on November 1, when Mayville State plays Valley City State at Jerome Berg Field. The Farmers Bowl committee held its kickoff meeting last week, and plans are being made to celebrate Mayville State’s 125th birthday, which is officially on November 2, as part of this annual event. We know the day will be filled with many great opportunities to celebrate! More information will be available soon.

Many Mayville State alumni and friends are working hard on behalf of the university through the many events and activities that take place each year. We sincerely appreciate all who support Mayville State in this way. I encourage you to get involved and take part in the many grand slam activities that happen here. You’ll be helping to ensure that Mayville State’s tradition of personal service will continue, and you’re sure to have a great time while doing it.
