Sept. 12, 2020

An anonymous Mayville State University donor has come forward for a second time and is issuing a challenge to all Mayville State alumni and friends. The donor will match dollar-for-dollar all gifts made to fall 2021 football scholarships, up to a total of $20,000. Gifts must be received in the MSU Foundation by Nov. 7, 2020. All funds received will help the football staff as they work to recruit and retain quality student-athletes for the MSU Comets football team. Funding will be used for scholarships awarded in the fall of 2021.

The challenge was announced Saturday, Sept. 12, the day of the first football game of the 2020 season for the Comets, when they hosted Waldorf University. In a hard-fought battle, the Comets were nearly successful in pulling off an upset. The game finished with a final score of 40-50. When the teams faced off last year, the Comets were blanked 0-63. The scholarship challenge ends on Nov. 7, 2020, the date of the last scheduled game for the 2020 season.

This marks the first season with head coach Rocky Larson at the helm for Mayville State. He was hired for the position on Feb. 1, 2020 and his first day on the job was Feb. 4. There were 36 kids on the roster when he arrived. Since then, he’s assembled a staff and they have worked extremely hard to build a team. They started the season with a roster of 88 players. This was no easy feat in normal times, and especially in the heat of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This influx of funding will have a big impact in our efforts to recruit local and regional talent with good character and to build on the momentum that Coach Larson and his staff have started,” said Mayville State Athletic Director Ryan Hall. “We sincerely appreciate the thoughtfulness and generosity of the anonymous donor who has issued this challenge.”
